Of the netlabel stuff found on the archive what seems to be the norm is best showen by Orange Dust
http://www.archive.org/details/EAR007

I'm in the U.S. and this form of music just does not do it for most of us. This guy is great but if they were to try to sale this here it would flop.

Should a netlabel be free music only because it would not be able to sale? Yes, lots of people would buy the Dust but most are not as good as he. Music is art, art is thoughts and feelings, thoughts and feelings are free, music as art will always be free.

I'm always up for some good tunes. Hook me up with what you think is the best the netlabels have to offer.

I dont believe that to be true. In fact, I bet the market size for independant punk vs independant electronic music/experimental, etc. is about the same size. as for that specific release.. it probably wouldnt do well sales wise even if it had a strong label behind it because well.. dnb, drillnbass, etc.. the harder and dsp-masterbatory styles of idm are dead. a few years ago it was hot as hell in the states and selling like wild fire - only a few survived.

"Should a netlabel be free music only because it would not be able to sale? "

i believe the direct opposite. in fact, if a netlabel takes the opposite approach and is really just a group or collective of people just putting out whatever they happend to finish recently.. i tend to never go back to those sites. lack of quality assurance and a lack of any visiable degree of 'professionalism' or dedication turns me off immediatly. in such cases.. why be a netlabel at all? just be some release group of friends or whatever. if anything netlabels are supposed to be quality filters for all the free and aspiring musicians out there. if theres no obvious standard of quality or direction.. whats the point.

anyways. thats 1 of my 2 cents. cant bring myself to write anymore. i agree w/ whoever said it first tho.. its good to see more/other genres and styles break into the netlabel world. at the moment it is still too top heavy w/ electronic. welcome.

oh and btw.. i like punk ;] after finally getting to the release i liked it for the most part. strong effort. reminds me of the early 90s era of the harder skate/punk bands etc. im personally more into stuff like the early descendants, op ivy, bad religion, the mummies, the queers, etc.

Ok, I understand your not into the style of music.
Care to show me what you think is a good release from a netlable? I'm sort of new, so have alot to learn.
Your reply could help me learn what some users of the archive would injoy more.

Oh man, tough question since i don't usually bookmark the netlabel tunes. Memory is not as good as it used to be. I have heard some stuff that I have liked, but to for me to even infer what I like would be saleable would be a stretch. you are probably far more into that side of things than i am. i go a little more toward the ambient side of the netlabel releases (probably because i am more into the jamband scene). i have just never liked punk music for the most part for the past 25 years or so, hence my rather crude way phrasing my prior post (sorry about that man).

the person to really ask would probably be NoiseCollector. He is far more knowledgeable than I in this arena. Some of the stuff he has posted or led me toward, I have liked (some i haven't).

Good luck in your searching and Happy Holidays!!

Cool, now I see why you didn't like the release.
NoiseCollector, has pointed out some good stuff. I can't say I'm into it all but most is good.
Sorry you didn't like the recording, maybe the next one.

Bright Blessings

Thanks... I post under "opensource audio" but also have a ton of stuff under the "ourmedia collection" where I first found out about archive. Check out ccmixter for creative commons artists you can post there stuff as long as you attribute it according to the license. I have some songs over there.

As for Archive, I will be updating keywords, which did not transfer from Ourmedia, to narrow down genres and styles as I try not to do too many songs in a row of the same type... strange personality disorder I have...
